For Eagle users

An Eagle alternative that reads what you saved

Eagle is a library for design assets. Tenoa is a library for everything you save: screenshots, pages, videos, PDFs, notes. Search reads inside them, every file gets a markdown note beside it, and the free phone app saves into the same folder

Eagle is a good tool, and it proved something. A local visual library, bought once, no subscription, is a product people will pay for. If your library is design assets and you live on the desktop, Eagle does that job well and cheaply. Keep it.

Most of what I save is not a design asset. It is a screenshot of a conversation, a page I want to come back to, a talk on YouTube, a paper as a PDF, a note to myself. Eagle treats those as files with tags. I wanted to search what was inside them, so Tenoa reads them.

So the transcript of the talk becomes searchable text. The words in the screenshot come back when you search for them. The paper carries a summary. And every one of those items is a markdown file sitting beside the original in a normal folder. There is no library container. Open the folder in any app and it is all there.

Both tools have free iPhone and iPad apps. Eagle Pocket lets you browse, search, and edit tags or annotations in an existing library. It does not capture or save new items. Tenoa lets you save screenshots, pages, and images from your phone into the same library on your computer.

One thing to be straight about: I have not lived in Eagle for months the way I lived in mymind. Eagle has added AI search and a phone app since I first looked, which is why I rechecked everything on 4 October 2026 against their docs, store page, and plugin directory. If I have something wrong, email me and I will fix it.

A folder any app can open

Every item in Tenoa is a markdown file you can open anywhere, with the original saved beside it in a normal folder. Your note, the tags and the summary live in that file, so they travel with it. Tenoa keeps a search index on top so everything stays fast. That index is throwaway. It rebuilds itself from the files whenever it needs to

Three things follow. There is no export step, because the files were yours from the moment you saved them. Any other tool can read the library: a text editor, a backup script, your own AI setup. If the app goes away, you lose the app. The files stay

FAQ

Questions people coming from Eagle ask

What is the difference between Eagle and Tenoa?+

Eagle is a desktop library for design assets, sold once with lifetime updates. Tenoa is a visual library for everything you save: images, screenshots, web pages, videos, PDFs and notes. Every item is a markdown file beside the original, search reads inside the content, and there are free iPhone and iPad apps

Can Tenoa search the text inside a screenshot?+

Yes. Search reads the words in a screenshot, the text of a PDF and the transcript of a video, on your own computer. Eagle offers image text through separate plugins such as Copy Image Text and Extract Text. I could not confirm that it is built in

Does Tenoa keep my original files?+

Yes. The original image, PDF or page sits untouched in a normal folder next to a markdown file that holds your note, the tags and the summary. There is no library container. Any app can open the folder

Can I move my Eagle library into Tenoa?+

Eagle can export your originals to a folder, and Tenoa can import a folder of files. Tags and notes do not travel inside the exported files, so check what you need before you move. A dedicated Eagle importer is not built yet. Email hello@tenoa.app if you want one; the order importers get built in is decided by who asks

Is Tenoa cheaper than Eagle?+

No. Eagle is $34.95 once with lifetime updates for two computers. Tenoa is $49 once for up to three desktop computers with a year of updates, then an optional $29 a year for hosted sync and new features. If you stop paying, everything you own keeps working

What platforms are supported?+

Today, Tenoa runs on Mac and Windows. The Mac app has a built-in Safari extension, plus live extensions for Chrome and Firefox. The free iPhone and iPad apps are live on the App Store
